What is The Photo Hunt?

The Photo Hunt is a customizable 3h session for a small group experience:

Iphoneography (day): all levels

A smartphone session encourages exploration without the heavy lifting - no equipment necessary other than your iPhone. Enjoy a photo walk while maxxing out your device’s technical and creative potential. Learn about a variety of apps and how to use them in tandem for technical and compositional tricks, to capture and document people, places, and things. Tell visual stories and make montages in-camera in one of the world’s greatest cities.

DSLR (night): intermediate camera enthusiasts

Work those fancy buttons, dials, and settings for high ISO photography in low light followed by shooting from dusk to dark with a tripod-mounted DSLR. Have fun on location with intentional camera movement (ICM) to capture happy accidents, and play with light painting using LED lights to color the night in bright colors. This nighttime multi-sensory experience is guaranteed to fire up your creativity.

At the conclusion of sessions, groups have the opportunity to share their work with other members and benefit from a friendly photo review over coffee, a glass of wine, or light meal.

In both sessions, the takeaway is similar - you learn:

technical skills

  • Camera settings
  • (Dslr) ISO, aperture, shutter speed, white balance, metering, exposure compensation (EV)
  • (iPhoneography) Multiple apps and tools for storytelling

  compositional skills

  • Seeing/identifying shapes, patterns, light, color and form for taking better shots
  • Understanding leading lines, rule of thirds, negative and positive space, depth of field
  •  Feeling the moment to capture the zeitgeist

communication skills

  • Talking about photographs and what you see; describing your process and visual vocabulary. Responding to the group's work

These out-of-doors, hands-on group photography sessions for groups of 12 become a catalyst for learning 'outside the frame' and expanding participants’ visual vocabulary .

As we crisscross New York City’s urban jungle, we consider our environment—Manhattan as an island, surrounded by even smaller islands (Governor’s Island, Roosevelt Island, City Island, Randall & Ward’s island, Ellis & Liberty Island, etc.) and the dynamic boroughs of Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island.

The Photo Hunt takes you there, on location - it leads participants with a smartphone by day or a DSLR and tripod for night photography to observe city life and digitally capture people, places and things—parks, bridges, cityscapes, neighborhoods, iconic buildings, historical sites, light and shadow, and magic in the moonlight.

In the spirit of urban adventure, you'll learn how to use your smartphone camera apps to take better pictures and harness the buttons and dials on your DSLR for the night session to communicate your unique vision.
